A Hollister woman reportedly went on some sort of rampage Saturday morning that began with the stabbing of her spouse, and ended on a freeway in San Jose.
Police in Hollister were first alerted to a wrong-way driver in the area of the Casa de Fruta historic resort, as Bay Area News Group reports, around 10 am on Saturday. Police would later learn that a 34-year-old woman had allegedly stabbed her spouse at a home in Hollister, and then took her sister's car "by force" and fled the scene.
On Highway 152 west of Casa de Fruta, after allegedly driving on the wrong side the road, the woman got into a head-on collision with a Chevrolet SUV. She then exited her sister's vehicle, which was apparently disabled, and carjacked a Honda Accord from a bystander, the CHP says.
From there, the woman reportedly drove on the shoulder of the road and cut off other vehicles as she fled toward Gilroy at high speed, where police then began pursuing the Honda. As Bay Area News Group reports, Gilroy police then lost track of the vehicle as it sped through the city.
As NBC Bay Area reports, CHP in San Jose received a report around 11:10 am of a woman walking on the 101 freeway south of Bernal Road, waving a knife and harming herself. According to the report, the woman was walking between the center divider and the right-hand shoulder and "going after vehicles with a knife."
The incident reportedly led to a significant traffic backup Saturday on 101.
A San Jose Police Department sergeant who happened to be in the area ultimately took the woman into custody, as the Chronicle reports, and brought her to the hospital. She had reportedly injured herself significantly with the knife, and she later died at the hospital.
Neither the CHP nor San Jose police have released any further information about the case, including the woman's name or whether they believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.
