SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Two people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation after a charging cell phone burst into flames inside a San Francisco home Monday morning, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

The occupants of the home at 50 Corona St. reported the fire at 5:49 a.m. According to SFFD Lt. Ken Smith, the cell phone was charging in a rear room of the house when it “popped,” causing an instant fire.

Firefighters arrived at the home in three minutes and saw flames and smoke coming from the rear room. Crews ran a water line to the fire and had it contained within 10 minutes, Smith said.

The two occupants were evaluated for minor smoke inhalation at the scene, according to Smith, and were transported to the hospital for further treatment.

The public is advised to avoid the area as crews remain on scene as of 6:30 a.m.

While exact circumstances of Monday’s fire remain unknown, the National Fire Protection Association advises that devices should be charged on hard, flat surfaces that allow heat to escape and avoid charging on bedding or couches. The organization also said to use the charging accessories that came with the device or ones that have been approved by the manufacturer.
